AI Governance

AI Governance Is an Operating Issue

Governance should not be added after implementation. When AI interacts with customers, finance or documents, control becomes part of the workflow.

AI governance is often discussed as if it belongs mainly to policy documents.

In practice, it is an operating issue.

When an AI system interacts with customers, employees, financial information or business documents, questions of control become part of the workflow.

What information can the system access?

Where does that information come from?

Who is allowed to change it?

What can the AI do automatically?

What requires approval?

How are exceptions handled?

Can the business determine why a particular action was taken?

What happens when the system is uncertain?

These questions become more important as AI moves from experimentation into operational processes.

A business may be comfortable using AI to draft an internal email.

It requires a different level of consideration when an AI system is communicating with customers, changing records, processing sensitive documents or initiating business actions.

Governance therefore should not be something added after implementation.

It should be considered during design.

At a practical level, that can mean:

Clear access controls.

Reliable sources of information.

Defined approval points.

Human escalation.

Audit trails where appropriate.

Testing.

Monitoring.

Documented responsibilities.

Defined boundaries for autonomous action.

Good governance does not necessarily mean making an AI system complicated.

It means making its role clear.

The objective is not to prevent businesses from using AI.

It is to allow businesses to use AI with appropriate control.

For businesses operating in environments where accuracy, confidentiality, accountability and auditability matter, this distinction is particularly important.

AI should fit into the operating control environment of the business.

It should not sit outside it.
